This Friday’s Eucharist: Homecoming

Notes: This can be printed in booklet form and will form an 8 page A5 booklet. The liturgy is the wrong way round today, to emphasise that when we know we are loved, it is safe for us to look at ourselves truthfully & repent, asking god to help us to be reordered and restored for his glory and habitation. NB: This service is not authorized according to the Canons of the CofE and may not usually be used in a Sunday morning Eucharist in a parish setting, but is within the Spirit of the law and sits under the provision of Canon B5.

The scripture readings are printed on invitations and placed in envelopes and distributed in

the congregation to be read at the time of the Word.

They are:

I Kings 8:27 But will  god really dwell on earth?

John 14:23 Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them and we will come to them and make our home with

and Rev 3:20 Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the

door I will come into his home  and share a meal with him.

At time of beginning…
In the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Let’s take a few moments of quiet, to lay down the troubles we are carrying and leave them in God’s care, opening ourselves up to meet with him.

The Prayer for The Day
Creator God,
You made us all in your image:
May we discern you in all that we do;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord,

Song: Be Still For the Presence of the Lord
Be still for the presence of the Lord
The Holy One is here
Come bow before Him now
With reverence and fear
In Him no sin is found
We stand on holy ground
Be still for the presence of the Lord
The Holy One is here

Be still for the glory of the Lord
Is shining all around
He burns with holy fire
With splendor He is crowned
How awesome is the sight
Our radiant King of Light
Be still for the glory of the Lord
Is shining all around

Be still for the power of the Lord
Is moving in this place
He comes to cleanse and heal
To minister His grace
No work too hard for Him
In faith receive from Him
Be still for the power of the Lord
Is moving in this place

The Word of God
All: Father God, as the word is read,
in our hearts, souls and bodies, may we feel your presence.
Scripture Readings: The Invitations
If you have an invitation, please open it and read out loud the passage of scripture on it.

Responding to the Invitation: Kim

We are God’s home

The Invitation

We have an invitation to the party,
Sent by the Word to welcome us home.
As we open it with trembling fingers,
We wonder if He really knows who we are,
Who we believe ourselves to be;
With all our failures, mistakes, fears and shame.
But we are each His guest of honour,
He has written our name on the table plan,
So everyone can see we are His!

As Christ invites us to meet him here,
We are no longer cast aside,
ignored or unseen.
We are beloved guests, offered unmerited grace.
Let us throw off our grave clothes and garments of shame;
And come to the table with heads held high to take our place!

The Great Thanksgiving Prayer

The Lord be with you
And also with you

Lift up your hearts
We lift them to the Lord
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
It is right to give thanks and praise
It is right to praise you, Father; Lord of all creation
In your love, you made us for yourself.
When we turned away
You did not reject us,
But came to meet us in your Son.
You embraced us as your children
And welcomed us to sit and eat with you.

In Christ you shared our life
That we might live in him and he in us
He opened his arms of love upon the cross
And made once for all the perfect sacrifice for sin

On the night he was betrayed, at supper with his friends
He took bread and gave you thanks;
He broke it and gave it to them saying:
Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you:
Do this in remembrance of me.
Father, we do this in remembrance of him;
His body is the bread of life.

At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine,
He gave thanks and said:
Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins;
Do this in remembrance of me
Father, we do this in remembrance of him:
His blood is shed for all.
As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory,
Send your Holy Spirit that this bread and this wine
May be to us the body and blood of your dear Son.

As we eat and drink these holy gifts
Make us one in Christ, our risen Lord.
With your whole Church throughout the world
We offer you this sacrifice of praise
And lift our voices to join in the eternal song of heaven:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
The Lord’s Prayer
As our Saviour taught us, so we pray:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
We break this bread
To share in the body of Christ
Though we are many, we are one body
Because we all share in one bread.
Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
Happy are those who are called to his supper.

Lord I am not worthy to receive you,
but only say the word and I shall be healed.

God’s people receive communion

God has chosen to make his home in us;
We pray this seeps into our souls
and re-orders our view of ourselves and all others
as redeemable; worthy of hope and a future.

God has chosen this earth, that he made for the blessing of all;
We pray this seeps into our souls
And re-orders our behaviour, our patterns of greed & consumption
And our care for the land.

God has chosen people who were far off to become his people;
We pray this seeps into our souls
And moves us to love and care for those who mourn,
Are outcast or alone.

Lord help us to see ourselves and others as you see us;
To put our house in order with your help: cleaning out the dark corners of sin and shame, inviting your light & healing in.

We pray for those we love who need your care and blessing: Martin Reed’s family; Ruth, recovering from surgery; Lynn and all the family; Rob and Fran, settling in to their new home; for teachers, and our children starting a new year in education; for farmers caring for the earth & bringing in the harvest.

As we remember God’s grace and all He has done for us,
we confess together:
All: We confess that our memory is weak,
That we look in the mirror, then forget who we are
We are prone to wandering off, lost and alone;
We confess at times we find it difficult to stick with You on this journey and are sometimes close to giving up.
May we remember that you gave everything in order to make your home with us;
that you have given us a new story of freedom & liberation:
Make us a people worthy of your habitation,
A community of compassion, kindness and peace.
We confess we have cupboards full of skeletons, drawers bursting with mistakes, fears and pain that we try to hide from you and from those who love us;
Forgive us when we judge others and don’t offer welcome,
At the same time as we cry out for forgiveness and belonging.
We are sorry and want to do better; help us amend our hearts and turn to you. Amen
The priest absolves the people.

The Sign of Peace
God gathers us together to care for one another on the journey of life.
The Peace of the Lord be always with you,
And also with you.
Let us greet one another with a sign of peace.

Concluding Prayers
God, our light and our salvation:
Illuminate our lives,
That we may see your goodness in the land of the living,
and looking on your beauty
may be changed into the likeness of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Send us out in the power of your Spirit,
To live and work to your praise and glory
In the name of Christ,

Please join us for lunch
